This project was incredibly fun for me. I absolutely love nature so the nature aspect of this piece was my favorite, since I do not succeed a ton at the mechanical and technology side of the piece. I went through project ideas that I have wanted to do before, and found a watercolored heart that someone did on pinterest. I then kept looking and searched mechanics, and found these chains and mechanical wheels all over the internet. I decided to combine the two ideas into one, where the mechanical wheels are working behind the heart that is being chained and strangled by the chains wrapped around it. I loved this idea because it can be interpreted as having deeper meaning, or it is just a pretty vision of art to others.
While making this project, I actually don't think I encountered many challenges at all. The project was a fun and fitting idea for me. Using watercolors was a first for the school year for me and it made me remember how much I like other types of painting besides just oil paints. It was incredibly fun to create. I did struggle with getting enough value within my piece since watercolor tends to be a softer approach to designing artwork, so to compensate for my lack of depth, I added cross hatching in the darkest areas of the piece for extra value. The piece really came together with pen. Without pen, I don't think this piece would have been as successful as it is! The use of pen allowed me to outline the changes in colors and shapes within the piece and gave defined lines to the areas that needed it the most. I really enjoyed working with watercolor and pen and found the two to be an incredibly balanced and fun combination for making art.
To do this project, I began by lightly drawing the shapes with pencil, then after finishing my shapes and details, I then began to add layers to different sections of the piece with the colors I wanted. I added up to I think nearly 10 layers in some of the darkest spots of seemingly waterless amounts of paints, and for other areas I added maybe 1 or 2 layers of soft paint instead. The making of this project was very easy after getting done with my painting. I never used any techniques besides wet on wet, layering, and drybrush for this project, so the painting part stayed fairly simple. After that, I went in with pen to outline the chains, mechanical wheels, and areas of the heart to help define the lines and shapes better. Once done, I cross hatched areas that werent dark enough within the piece to help add depth, making the final result look great.
I think I really grew with my creative composition abilities since I drew from multiple pictures for this project, instead of just a photo that I had already taken myself and was just going to copy. I also definitely grew with my watercolor skills and pen skills. For watercolor, I definitely got better at going bold with my colors, since it's easy to be afraid of going dark. With pen, I was good at not going overboard and finding the right time and amount to stop at for the different areas of the piece. Overall, this project was not only a success and great improvement opportunity, but it also ended up being one of my favorites for the year.
