This is my self portrait project. For this project, I began very intimidated. The basis of this project is definitely not one of my favorites. My least favorite artistic idea would be to do a figure drawing or facial drawing. So when I brainstormed for this project, I decided to make it as fun as possible by making an unrealistic piece (which is my favorite style of art) and I looked through snapchat filters. When I came across the ogre one above, I thought it was funny so I decided it was a great idea, especially because of how much it changes your face from the basic look of a face.
During the process of making this artpiece, I really struggled with finding the right shapes and lines for where the face changed. It was extremely challenging to show the depth and shadows on the face because I am not the best at precision in my art. The best way I handled it was to just let things dry, go over, and try again. I did that about 3 times, which was pretty frustrating since the result I got wasn't anywhere near what I hoped it would be. I definitely think I did succeed though at making it look like myself instead of it looking like a portrait of someone else.
I really like using oil paints much more than acrylics, and since they blended so well and easily, I figured it'd be a great fit for the self portrait project. After doing the project though, I noticed that for me it tends to be easier to mess up with the oils on things that require precision like a portrait. So maybe a better fit for me would've been to use a medium like prisma color which takes time to build up and can have defined lines easier. The whole piece for me while using oils was a complicated process. I began with my wash and then drew the basic lines and shapes of my face. Then I began to form my colors and add to my face with a base color. Then I went back using the yellows and whites that were a part of my green skin tone that I made to help highlight the cheekbones and my forehead. Then, I used the blue undertone from the green to darken under my jawline and the hollows of my cheek.
This project gave me the least growth out of all we have done this semester. I just think that my best work and improvement is done on the topics that I like and find more fun, and since this one is my least favorite topic possible, I think I made the least amount of growth on it. Though I didn't make much progress, I did realize what some of my strengths and weaknesses were with oil paint, which will help me decide the best medium to use for my future projects. So now I know for when I need to do a detailed and precise artpiece, oil wouldn't be a good option for me. But, if I need to do a loose, colorful artwork, I know that oil is a great medium for me to use!
