My experience with the oil paints went much better than it did in Art 3. In Art 3, i had never worked with oil paint before and it showed. I struggled with the differences between acrylics and oils. With the oils last year, I ended up blending colors i didnt want to and applied too flat of a layer of paint. But, this lesson where I painted an avocado with brushes and painted cherries with a pallet knife, went much better.
First, I painted an avocado with the brushes and that project went alright for me. I was able to implement good values and mix colors well within the actual avocado. My seed had good values and depth, creating a more realistic image, which is what I wanted to accomplish. Though the main image of the piece was a success, I struggled with adding a shadow onto the orange table that was holding the avocado. I discovered adding shadows to orange is quite hard and can end up just becoming a blurry brown color. When making my piece, I discovered that shadows should mostly follow the shape and i struggled with that, but it helped me realize how to do it right the next time when I was finished.
Second, I painted 2 cherries with a pallet knife. I really enjoyed pallet knife and believed I was more successful with it than with brushes. I enjoyed the textures that I was able to create with the pallet knife, and how it looked better when you were messy with it. The textures were intensified, and the blending was slowed down, which is exaclty what I struggled with using brushes, which made me like using the pallet knife more. Overall, the values and shadowing also allowed my piece to be more successful with my use of bold darks and lights on my piece.
