I began this project, wanting to do something related to halloweentime. I brainstored ideas including pumpkins, haunted houses, hay rides, etc. I ended up deciding on pumpkins for a few days but when I began my deeper planning after taking pictures, I was unhappy with how my piece was coming along. While sketching the pumpkins onto my canvas, I noticed I did not like it and decided to change my idea. I went to the store that day and began to look around the produce section for some new ideas. While looking around I noticed the "sample" stations had cut up oranges, so I thought it would be a great interior spaces idea to try to depict. I took different pictures for different compositions of the oranges to try and chose which one I liked the most. When I settled on the right composition, I began sketching the orange slices onto my canvas. I decided to randomly allocate colors to different oranges and tried to use as much color as I could within the different oranges. I really like how I incorporated so much color into the piece and how I have been using different colors on each orange with no repeats.
While painting this project, I started with blending colors and chosing where to put the different ones on the canvas. I used lighter colors to be the interiors, and darker versions of those colors to be the peels of the oranges. I worked on different areas of the canvas at a time to prevent myself from using too many similar colors in a cluster of oranges. I have been struggling in making the oranges look like oranges still, since they are unrealistic colors. I plan to add more details within the slices of the veins, as well as add more of the textures of the peel of the fruits. I have realized that flesh color should be kept away from me forever. I am never picking it up again. It should never be used as a background color, only for details. It is a very hard color to add values too as I am struggling with the background of this piece since I (wrongly) chose to use flesh as the background. I do not believe much success was made with this piece except for realizing what I need to fix for future projects I do with oils.
